Authorities Nab Alleged Hate-Crime Murderer
After a woman shoved a man onto the tracks to be struck by an oncoming train made headlines throughout the city, police released recording from the surveillance cameras showing the assailant as she fled the scene. Police say they were led to the alleged murderer when an anonymous tipster passed her on the street and recognized her face from the video footage.
According to the police reports released after the homicide took place, witnesses say the victim was standing towards the edge of the subway platform looking at the approaching 7 Train when he was attacked. At approximately 8 PM on Thursday, December 27th, a heavyset woman suddenly rushed the 46-year old, pushing him into the path of the speeding train, where he was killed without any chance to escape, they told investigators.
The woman immediately fled down a stairwell, but not before her face was captured by surveillance cameras. Detectives with the NYPD began a three-day hunt for the suspect, releasing the camera recordings to media outlets in hope they would help the search. Sure enough, authorities claim, a local Brooklyn-ite saw the defendant on the street and noted the resemblance to the footage. She was taken into custody shortly thereafter.
Act Classified As Hate Crime As New Details Surface
After taking the suspect, a 31-year old Queens woman, into custody, investigators allege that she confessed to the crime. According to a report released by the DA's office, the defendant gleefully told police that she had killed the man, believing him to be a Muslim, as part of a personal vendetta stemming from the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center.
Friends and family members of the slain victim told reporters that the 46-year old immigrant from India was a devotee of the Hindu faith. Due to her stated motivations for the crime, the District Attorney's office has chosen to charge the suspect with murder as a hate crime. She is being held without bail, and is expected to be given a psychiatric evaluation to determine her mental wellbeing.
