Investigators Seek Masked Assailant In 'Wedding Band' Murder
While walking home from work in the Park Slope neighborhood in Brooklyn, the victim of an apparent mugging was killed when he struck his head on the pavement. Authorities claim the suspect stole money from the victim, as well as his golden wedding ring.
According to the police report released in the immediate aftermath of the alleged slaying, the incident is believed to have taken place on Wednesday, January 10th. Shortly after 7:00 PM that evening, the victim, a 67-year old local man, was leaving work. As the man was walking on 18th Street in the South Slope, he was reportedly approached by a large man wearing a mask. According to a witness, the attacker violently shoved the elderly man to the ground, and began rummaging through his pockets.
Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene and discovered the body of the victim lying on the street. According to the incident report, police believe that the force of the shove caused the man's head to strike the ground, fatally injuring him. He was rushed to nearby Lutheran Medical Center, but medical professionals were unable to save his life. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Locals told reporters that the victim was a popular figure in the neighborhood, where had been running a travel agency for twenty years.
"He was a nice guy, I've known him for about 20 years, he's just a great person," said one man, the owner of a nearby deli. "I'm so surprised it happened."
Investigators say they are canvassing the neighborhood, hoping to find any other witnesses who may have seen the incident take place. They have also released photographs of the stolen wedding band, hoping to track the assailant that way. They are asking that anyone with information regarding the attack contact them as soon as possible.
