Conspiracy can be defined as two or more individuals agreeing to commit a crime or to perpetuate some sort of illegal act. The end result of the conspiracy may be legal, but the planned intentions and means are illegal.
An Example of Conspiracy
To give you a better understanding of how conspiracy works as a crime, following is an example. Three people get together and create a plan to rob a jewelry store. One of the individuals is a former employee who happens to have made an extra key to the store long before leaving his job. Everything is planned, the timing, the get away car and driver, all the equipment is purchased for concealing their identities, masks, gloves, wire cutters to clip the surveillance camera wiring and so forth. The evening comes when they are to carry out the robbery and when the former employee puts his key into the lock and turns it, the key does not work. He did not calculate the fact that the locks are changed on the front door every three or four months as a safety measure; the robbery was foiled.
Even though the robbery never took place, the planning of it (agreement between the conspirators to commit an illegal act) was conspiracy, and is punishable by law. In other words, even if the crime is not committed, the conspirators can be prosecuted beneath federal law. In many instances, if one is found to be part of a conspiracy to murder someone, this can still be punishable. Conspiracy can involve violating federal laws, money laundering, conspiring to manufacture drugs or weapons, to steal or defraud others and more.
