A recent report by the federal Office of National Drug Control based on data gathered by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) showed increases in drug use among young people in the U.S. along with a decrease in their perception of harm attached with it. The statistics related stated that, after alcohol, the most commonly used drug for teenagers is marijuana and that the daily use of this drug has grown, especially for 8th graders. Another statistic showed that the number of high school seniors who thought there was a risk in using heroin on an occasional basis had dropped from 79.7 percent in 2009 to 74.8 percent a year later. In a 2012 study by the NIDA, 45 percent of all 12th-graders surveyed had used marijuana at least once in their lifetime while 36 percent had used it in the past year.
According to NIDA, illegal drug use in the U.S. has been rising. In 2011, 8.7 percent of the country's population had used an illegal drug or abused a prescription drug in the past month, which was an increase over 8.3 percent in 2002. In terms of millions of people, that is a significant number of people. Most people begin their drug use as teenagers, with the most commonly used drug being marijuana, followed by pain relievers. Although drug use is highest among teenagers and those in their early 20's, the NIDA reports that drug use among those aged 50 and above is rising.
