A 19 year-old Texas teen has been in jail since March 27 after being arrested for making terrorist threats which he and his parents claim were a joke. The boy was 18 when he was arrested after making comments on Facebook while playing a video game. During the game, he got into an argument with another player who accused him of being "insane." He responded with sarcasm about how he was so crazy that he would go into a school and shoot kids, after which he inserted the LOL and JK abbreviations, meaning "laugh out loud" and "just kidding."
An unidentified woman saw the comment online and alerted local police when she determined that the teen lived near a school. He now faces a possibility of eight years in prison for making terrorist threats. His parents have started an online petition to help save their son from prison. They have also made statements warning other parents and teens about the danger of making comments on social media such as Facebook and Twitter that can be viewed as terrorist threats.
Under Texas Penal Code Section 22.07, a person can be charged with making a terrorist threat by threatening violence to any person, group of persons, or property which places them in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or which prevents or interrupts the occupation or use of a public place, such as a school.
