A 22 year-old man, K.S., who aimed a laser pointer at a helicopter belonging to the Dallas Police Force back in January of this year has been sentenced to 30 months in a federal prison. According to the U.S. Attorney prosecuting the case, his actions were considered to be very dangerous and could have led to disastrous consequences. He aimed the laser into the cockpit of the helicopter which obscured the pilot's vision and hindered his ability to control the chopper. The high-powered laser was used four times during a 10-minute period during the incident. At the time, the chopper passed over the home of the defendant, looking for a burglary suspect.
The laser incident was investigated by the Dallas Police Department, the FBI, and the Federal Air Marshal Service. Officers at the time were able to trace where the laser light came from through their own technical equipment. K.S. is the first person in the North Texas area charged with violating the new federal law which bans pointing a laser into aircraft. The new law merely requires proof that the individual knowingly pointed a laser at an aircraft. Under the law which was enacted in 2012, a defendant faces up to five years in prison and a fine that could be as high as $250,000. In this case, K.S. pleaded guilty to the federal crime last February.
