Police arrested a Minneapolis man with an outstanding arrest warrant after a call was made reporting that a man was driving his car while drinking beer. The responding officer located the vehicle that was described by the caller, pulled up behind it and turned on his emergency lights. Instead of stopping immediately, the car continued a little farther down the street and then pulled into a restaurant parking lot. A witness that had been at the location where the officer first attempted to pull the driver over said he saw the driver throw something out of the window. The witness turned over the item to the officer. It turned out to be a black bag with 38.6 grams of meth inside. The officer also discovered that the driver, J.G., 31 years old, had a previous controlled substance conviction and had a felony arrest warrant out against him. The officer took J.G. into custody and booked him for first degree controlled substance charges. Don't hesitate to get the help of a criminal defense lawyer immediately if you have been charged with a drug crime.
About First Degree Drug Offense Charges
First degree controlled substance offenses are serious felonies and are heavily punished. Charges for the crime include alleged instances of possession or distribution of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamines or larger amounts of other drugs such as marijuana, ecstasy, etc. This charge may be assessed if drug sales are being conducted near a school, park or other such locations. While possession or sales of any amount of cocaine, heroin or meth is at least a third degree felony, possession of 25 grams or more of one of these drugs makes it a first degree offense. The penalties for this felony first degree offense include up to 30 years in prison and up to $1 million in fines if the individual charged with the crime has a previous felony drug crime conviction.
