The incident began when a 35-year-old man was pulled over by two police officers for a traffic violation. The driver, R.E., was stopped around 9:30 at night near a South Dallas intersection. One of the officers approached the car and began speaking with the driver but the individual was not following the officer's directions. The officer became suspicious when the driver reached for an object near him inside the car. The policeman took action to protect himself against the driver's suspicious behavior and shot the man in the leg before he could produce the hidden object.
The driver then sped away, attempting to evade arrest as the officers pursued him. The driver was stopped and taken into custody a short time later. He was taken to a local medical center and treated for a gunshot wound to his right hip. Officers found a handgun in the man's possession. He has been charged with evading arrest and unlawfully carrying a weapon.
