Dallas police recently took a man into custody who is accused of swindling several elderly individuals out of large sums of cash. Police initially began looking for a tall man approximately in his 40s who had been employing a scheme to obtain cash from elderly victims who were under the impression that the suspect was a police officer. In one incident, an 81-year-old woman was contacted at her home by someone with a blocked number. The caller said he was a police officer investigating a bank fraud case. He asked the elderly woman to withdraw a substantial sum of cash from her bank account and meet with him as part of the investigation. The woman agreed to meet who she thought was an officer at a nearby tavern. Upon meeting, the man asked to examine the cash. He told the woman he would return after inspecting the cash for counterfeit bills. He never returned. The incident was captured on a surveillance camera at the tavern's bar. Man Faces the Possibility of Serious Penalties for Felony Charges
R.C. was arrested and held in county jail pending charges for the alleged fraud offense. Police believe the man is responsible for obtaining an approximate total of $100,000 by perpetrating a theft scheme on several elderly victims. He has been charged with felony theft by deception which carries a substantial penalty if a conviction is obtained. A theft crime where the value of the item or cash stolen is over $500 is charged as a felony. Circumstances surrounding the alleged offense such as deception, threats of violence, assault, use of a weapon during the crime, etc can increase the severity of the charge. R.C. could receive punishment including expensive fines and restitution, lengthy imprisonment, community service and other penalties if a conviction is obtained.
