On March 1, 2013 the Dallas News reported the arrest of two Dallas police officers who apparently committed perjury as well as tampering with evidence in area drug cases. The officers, J.L. and R.D. have been charged with tampering with or fabricating evidence and aggravated perjury. The charges are both third-degree felonies; they carry penalties of up to ten years in prison and $10,000 in fines. The officers were also fired from their jobs through a disciplinary hearing. 60 cases involving the two officers have been dismissed by the District Attorney's office in Dallas.
The officers are accused of lying in court about a drug case in late 2011 which resulted in nearly 600 marijuana plants being seized as evidence. They were also accused of lying about a traffic violation that they claimed to witness which led to another drug case involving heroin. A Dallas judge called the two officers' testimony perjurious in regards to another drug case in 2011, saying that they detained the defendant in the case without probable cause and that they violated his constitutional rights. The judge also accused the officers of lying about where they found so-called drug money and other evidence. The officers' testimony differed from that given by a very credible witness at the time, according to newspaper reports.
