A former Dallas police officer who worked at Crime Stoppers for seven years was convicted of wire fraud and tax evasion in connection with the program. A national program, Crime Stoppers allows individuals to call in anonymously and receive cash awards for valid leads and tips that can result in the arrest and indictment of those suspected of crimes. According to court records, the former police officer worked at the program from 2003 to 2010 and was at one time the head of the Dallas Crime Stoppers office. She and her female accomplice were convicted of defrauding the program by providing phony information which led to cash rewards, which they then deposited into their bank accounts.
Overall, it was reported that the two women collected a minimum of $250,000. T. R., the former head of the office, who pleaded guilty to the charges, received a federal prison sentence of 46 months as well as a restitution order of more than $274,000 to be paid to the North Texas Crime Commission, which funded the Crime Stoppers program in Dallas. Her accomplice, who also pleaded guilty to criminal charges, awaits sentencing which involves a five-year maximum sentence as well as a fine of up to $250,000.
