On January 4th, Cornelius Dupree, 51, was freed from prison after serving more than 30 years behind bars for a 1979 rape and
robbery charge, he did not commit. Released because of recent DNA findings, he would have otherwise remained in prison if it weren't for a legal group called the "Innocence Project," who took an interest in his case.
At only 19, Dupree was misidentified by the rape victim as one of the two men who raped her and robbed her male companion at gun point. However, the male victim never identified Dupree as one of the robbers in the case. Still, Dupree was convicted and sent to prison for 75 years in a Dallas prison. All the while, Dupree maintained his innocence, however, his several requests for an appeal were denied. His request fell on deaf ears until the Innocence Project, a legal group, specializing in wrongful convictions picked up his case. After the group requested to have the DNA evidence in the case tested against Dupree's, it was found that Dupree's DNA was in fact, not a match to the perpetrator back in 1979.
