A 40-year-old man from California was recently sentenced to six years in prison for fraud. He was operating a job scam and falsely promising "mystery shopper "and "bartending jobs" to people around the country. Through his scheme, he made more than six million dollars from thousands of unwitting victims all across the country. U.S. District Judge Terry J. Hatter Jr., who gave the sentence noted, that not only did the victims of the fraud lose money; it also caused a loss of hope and opportunity for them.
The man was convicted of seven counts of wire fraud and three counts of mail fraud for falsely promising people work. He had set up two different companies to sell fraudulent training programs, certifications and job referrals. He placed ads in papers all over the country offering mystery shopper positions and bartending jobs. After the evidence was reviewed in the trial, it was discovered that approximately 87,000 victims had been defrauded between 2001 and 2004 causing 6.2 million dollars in losses.
