FBI Discovers Wanted Fugitive In Santa Monica
After a manhunt that lasted sixteen years, a major mob boss from Boston was arrested by federal investigators, CBS News reports.
The former head of the Irish Mafia in Boston, the gangster was discovered hiding out in California thanks to a tip received by FBI officials. The agents acted quickly, identifying an elderly couple living quietly in a Santa Monica apartment as secretly being the much sought-after criminals. According to the landlord of the building they were living in, the 81-year old mobster and his 60-year old girlfriend were perfectly behaved, quiet and inconspicuous tenants. The only noticeable thing, he recalled to reporters, was that the couple had always paid rent every month in cash.
Wanted in connection with at least 19 murders, most of which occurred in the Massachusetts area, the crime boss has been formally charged with racketeering, drug trafficking, extortion, and money laundering. He is scheduled to appear before a Boston district court to answer these offenses. He is also expected to face trial for a vicious murder in Florida he was allegedly involved in.
FBI Crosses Name Off Most Wanted List
The gangster had been on the federal agency’s top ten most wanted fugitives list for more than a decade, evading capture for a long time. At the time of his capture, agents reported, more than 30 guns were seized by the arresting officers, as well as $800,000 in cash.
Other residents of the apartment came forward after the arrest, telling investigators they though the elderly man was suffering from dementia, and that they feared for the safety of his girlfriend due to what they described as his ‘violent rages’.
He is expected to make his first court appearance in Boston on Friday at 4:00 p.m.
