Authorities Confiscate Thousands In Cash And Drugs From Student Housing
Officials with the Butler County Undercover Regional Narcotics unit, or BURN, say they believe the five youths arrested on Thursday are the first of many to follow. Saying the investigation has only uncovered "the tip of the iceberg," as officials reported during a press release, the Butler County Sheriff's Office are continuing to probe the alleged drug operation.
Three students at Miami University as well as one Ohio State student and a Fairfield teenager were placed under arrest on Thursday, April 18th. The five youths were reportedly in charge of a larger drug smuggling operation that handled a large amount of marijuana, as well as hash butter and candy, and molly, a refined form of ecstasy. The arrests came hard on the heels of another big drug bust, officials reported, which took place in March. Members of BURN allegedly seized $1 million in synthetic narcotics being distributed at wireless stores in Hamilton in the earlier raid.
According to a report released by the Butler Sheriff's Department, BURN unit operatives had been investigating the young dealers for several months. In addition to the five arrests, authorities claim to have seized $10,000 in cash at two different student houses, as well as more than five pounds of marijuana, in both leaf and candy form. The bust also yielded multiple grams of hash butter, and 40 grams of molly. Finally, law enforcement officers say they seized a 2008 Mercury Mariner in connection with the operation.
"It's a small percentage of the students, but when you have one student that's transporting this, and that's being distributed to the students, we don't know if this is going to end up in high school hands," the Sheriff told media members at the press conference. "Imagine if one of these suckers was dropped at one of the grade schools and one of your kids or grandkids saw it."
Police have filed charges of drug trafficking against the three Miami students arrested on Thursday. They also charged the Ohio State student with possession and permitting drug abuse, and the teenager with possession of illegal narcotics.
