Miami City Commission: Ban Assault Weapons

The Miami City Commission unanimously passed a resolution recently concerning gun control. The Commission showed its stance on the issue by requesting that legislation be approved that would prohibit military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. The commissioners also want to see weapons trafficking made into a federal offense as well as mandatory background checks on gun sales with relevant mental health records incorporated into the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Miami's mayor is a member of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns (MAIG) group; he requested that the commission pass the resolution, according to its members. MAIG is a nonpartisan group of more than 800 mayors across the country that has called for stiffer gun control following the shooting of children and staff at an elementary school in Connecticut last year.
In conjunction with the above resolution, the city of Miami conducted buybacks of guns from residents in the area during three Saturdays, which ended on February 2, 2013. In the meantime, the state of Florida reported its millionth concealed weapon permit in December 2012. The number of such permits issued in Florida has grown faster than any other state in the nation, according to a Florida Commissioner.
