Suspect Charged in Los Angeles Area iPhone Scam

Police had been investigating several reports of people getting ripped off when attempting to purchase an iPhone from someone on Craigslist. One victim reported that he met with a man claiming to sell iPhones via the free classifieds website intending to purchase three of the high-demand cellular phones. The seller arrived in a black SUV and the two exchanged cash and the three iPhone boxes. The man quickly got back into his vehicle—which had no license plates—and drove away.

When the buyer opened one of the boxes to examine the phone he discovered a user's manual and a ceramic tile—no phone. Police detectives later arrested a 41-year-old man, L.D., after observing him trying to sell iPhone boxes that contained no phones according to reports. More boxes containing only a ceramic tile were found in the man's possession. L.D. has been charged with four counts of grand theft.
