A 12-year-old boy was recently charged with two felony counts of making false bomb threats as well as other charges relating to causing an unnecessary SWAT team response in two separate incidents. The first hoax that the boy is allegedly responsible for occurred at the home of Ashton Kutcher last year. A call was placed to police in early October using a texting device used by deaf people and others for making phone calls. The call stated that armed gunmen were at the house with explosives and that some people inside had been shot. The call was taken seriously and police, SWAT and bomb squad teams were dispatched to Kutcher's home. Several workers at the house were held at gunpoint until it was discovered that the call was a hoax. Kutcher was not home at the time of the incident.
The boy is accused of being responsible for a second false threat that occurred later that month at a bank. The call reported that there was an emergency involving a bomb at a Wells Fargo bank. SWAT teams responded to that call as well only to find that it was a hoax as well. An investigation was launched to find those responsible for the false bomb threat calls at Kutcher's home, the bank and a string of other similar calls made to elicit a tactical response by authorities. Such hoax calls have been called "swatting" since it is assumed that they were made in an attempt to get the deployment of SWAT and bomb squad teams. The investigation led to the arrest of the 12-year-old boy who is being charged with serious felonies despite being a juvenile.
