Devin Ebanks, the 23-year-old forward for the Los Angeles Lakers, was taken into custody in the early morning hours last Friday. Details of the exact circumstances of Ebanks' arrest were not available but it was released that he was pulled over just before 3:00 am by California Highway Patrol officers and then booked about an hour later. He was released on $5,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court for DUI charges in early December. Talk to a criminal defense lawyer skilled in DUI defense if you have been charged with driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Drunk driving and DUI of drugs charges can result in severe penalties if you are found guilty. It is generally known that an individual can be arrested and charged with DUI if their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) is 0.08 percent or higher. What is perhaps not so well known is that a driver can be charged with driving under the influence if it is deemed that the individual had consumed drugs or alcohol that were impairing their ability to operate the vehicle compared to a sober individual. In either case, the punishment and repercussions can be very serious even if it is your first DUI charge. A conviction can mean jail or prison time, expensive fines, suspended driver's license, lengthy probation, installation of an ignition interlock device on your car, court ordered substance abuse counseling and more. Additionally, a subsequent offense within a certain amount of time from a previous conviction can mean substantially harsher punishment in the form of increased prison time and the possibility of thousands of dollars in fines.
