Man Attempts to Rob Seven Eleven While Wearing Cartoon Costume
After allegedly attempting to hold up a convenience store while wearing a costume of beloved children's TV show character Gumby, a man and his accomplice turned themselves in to police. The two young men claimed that the attempt was merely a practical joke. Attorneys with the District Attorney's office disagreed, however, and have filed charges against the men.
The incident took place just after midnight on Labor Day, September 5th. A clerk was manning the desk at a Seven-Eleven on Carmel Mountain Road when a man dressed in a full-body green Gumby outfit entered the store. The person told the clerk that he had a gun and demanded the cash from the register. Later claiming that he thought it was a joke, the employee laughed and refused, saying he had cleaning to do. The attempted robber then fumbled in his suit, allegedly for a gun, then left shortly afterwards.
Teenage Boys Turn Themselves In, Along With Costume
Shrugging off the incident, it was only when the clerk told his supervisor about the event that police were called in. Upon reviewing tapes from that night, law enforcement officials decided to treat the incident as a crime. An investigation was announced.
Shortly thereafter, two nineteen-year olds turned themselves in at a police station, claiming responsibility for the act. They brought the Gumby costume along as proof. Asserting that they meant the episode as a prank, they threw themselves upon the mercy of the authorities. Lawyers with the DA's office have charged the two with several counts of misdemeanor burglary, to which they have pled not guilty. If found guilty of this crime, the boys could be sentenced to up to three years in jail.
