A synthetic opiate which has been identified as acetyl fentanyl has been found in the bodies of several people who have died in Rhode Island in the past few months. Most of the people who died from the drug were intravenous drug users. As of June 14, 2013 14 people in the state have died after using the synthetic drug. The Rhode Island Department of Health in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a press release concerning the illegal drug, stating that it has properties which are similar to morphine. The drug is not a commercial drug, not approved by the FDA, and not prescribed by doctors.
Health experts warned that the risk of overdose is very real for anyone addicted to opiates. As regards the synthetic opiate, a Providence man has been arrested for possession of and trafficking the drug. He is accused of selling the drug as heroin but has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
