Local Telemarketing Fraud Exposed; 15 Indicted

Fifteen people appeared before a Maricopa County Superior Court judge recently facing serious fraud charges. The men and women were indicted for a variety of fraudulent and other illegal acts including illegal control of an enterprise, unlawful telephone solicitation, fraud schemes and artifices and aggravated taking identity of another. The telemarketing scheme involved calls which offered people a way to work from home and make a significant amount of income by helping people get out of debt. Victims were asked to invest in the program using a credit card. The credit card info was then sold or the card was maxed out in order to fraudulently obtain funds.

Defendants Could Be Facing Federal Charges

Scottsdale police were first put onto the scam earlier this year when several people were arrested that had stolen credit cards in their possession. Local police then worked in conjunction with the Arizona Electronic Crimes Task Force for several months on the investigation in order to put a stop to the scheme. Together, authorities were able to locate and shut down six telemarketing centers that were part of the fraud. Since most of the victims were out of state, the fifteen individuals will most likely be facing very serious federal charges.
