The crime rate in Chicago dropped by 8 percent in the first quarter of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012, according to the Chicago Police Department. Overall, since 2011 the crime rate has decreased by 15 percent. As part of a continuing push to lower the crime rate, the CPD has created a program called Operation Impact, which uses foot patrols in neighborhoods which are considered to be the most violent. As of May 15, 2013 the CPD has added 105 new police recruits to the program.
Operation Impact targets approximately 20 zones of the metropolitan area that are more prone to violence. These zones account for about 20 percent of the city's crime while representing only 3 percent of the geographical area. According to Chicago's Police Chief, the program has resulted in a 70 percent decrease in murders, a 50 percent decrease in shootings, and a 30 percent decrease in overall crime in these zones since its inception in February of this year. Currently, approximately 400 police officers work on Operation Impact with some working overtime on their days off. The added recruits will strengthen that group and allow an expanded effort into reducing crime further in these neighborhoods.
