K.R., 19 years old, is facing serious DUI-related charges after he was involved in a fatal two-car collision. K.R. was driving a late model sedan west on 63rd Street at about 2:25 in the morning on Sunday when the wreck happened. Police say he drove through a red light at the intersection with Woodlawn Avenue causing a crash with a sport utility vehicle. The black SUV involved had the right of way and was unable to slow or avoid colliding with K.R.'s sedan. It hit the sedan and caused it to spin out and hit a utility pole. There were three passengers in the sedan ages 18, 19 and 22—two women and a man. K.R. and all three passengers suffered critical to minor injuries. The 19-year-old female passenger refused medical treatment while the two other were transported to the hospital in critical condition. One was stabilized and is expected to recover but the 18-year-old woman died of her injuries about an hour after the accident. K.R. was in serious condition but is now listed as being in stable condition. The driver and passenger in the SUV suffered only minor injuries and declined medical treatment. Authorities filed charges against K.R. and plan to take him into custody after his release from the hospital. Charges include operating a vehicle without insurance, driving under the influence of an intoxicating compound, aggravated driving under the influence, disobeying a signal, causing an accident and causing a fatality. If convicted of the full charges against him, K.R. could receive sentencing for 10 years or more behind bars, thousands in fines as well as other penalties. Consult with a knowledgeable criminal defense lawyer if you have been charged with DUI or other offenses.
