Domestic violence is a problem that afflicts every town, city, country and nation. Domestic violence covers a wide spectrum of violence between couples, spouses, family members or other individuals who live together.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, one in four women has experienced domestic violence at some point in her life. Women account for 85% of the victims involving intimate partner violence, and men account for 15%. Young women, from the ages of 20-24 are at the greatest risk of nonfatal intimate partner violence, according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics. In addition, men and women who are separated or divorced are at the greatest risk for intimate partner violence.
Domestic violence is color blind; women of all races are at equal risk of becoming a victim of domestic violence. Although domestic violence afflicts people from all incomes, people with an annual income of 25K or less are 3-times more likely to be victims of intimate partner violence than people with an annual income above 50K.
Where people live does have an effect on rates of intimate partner violence. The highest rate of intimate partner violence occurred in urban areas, with violence occurring about 20% less in non-urban areas. In the United States alone, 3 out of 4 people personally know somebody who has been a victim of domestic violence. 30% of women in America say they know a woman who has been physically abused by her boyfriend or husband in the last 12 months. On average, one man and three women are killed every day by an intimate partner.
