An 18 year-old boy, A.B., was charged with multiple felonies in North Dakota last year after supplying his 17 year-old friend with a synthetic drug known as "smiles." The drug, in the form of a white powder and known as 2C-I, was purchased from the older boy's drug dealer. The two boys mixed it into melted chocolate. An hour after ingesting it, the younger boy went into fits which involved hyperventilating, smashing his head against the ground, and foaming at the mouth. Several hours later, he was dead. As a result, the older boy was charged with third-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter, selling a controlled substance to a minor, and selling a controlled substance. For the murder charge alone, he could face 25 years in prison.
The above overdose of an individual taking the synthetic hallucinatory drug is not the first. In the same area of North Dakota, another teenager died from 2C-I the previous day. The effects of the drug generally last from four to twelve hours and cause dilation of pupils, high energy, muscle relaxation, euphoria, hallucinations, and can cause nausea, vomiting, and other dangerous side effects. It has been classed as a Schedule 1 drug, making its possession and distribution a criminal offense. It can come in liquid or pill form as well and can be snorted or swallowed. The synthetic drug can be concocted by home chemists, using powders imported from China and other materials. Because of this, its ingredients and manufacture can be toxic and lethal.
