Everett commuters are thankful that the needed second round of bridge repairs was recently conducted during an overnight project. The 85-year-old bridge was first closed for emergency repairs in December after an alleged drunk driver caused structural damage to support beams. The bridge was closed to commuters on a Monday until the following afternoon creating headaches for commuters. The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office report on the incident states that a 37-year-old woman caused the damage in an early morning incident that weekend. A deputy first tried to pull the woman over after clocking her SUV's speed at nearly 70 mph in a 35 mph zone. She allegedly refused to pull over despite the officer's use of the emergency lights and siren. The officer was able to speak with her, however, when she stopped for a red light. He reported that she smelled of alcohol and allegedly admitted to being drunk and not having a drivers' license or insurance. The deputy left the side of the woman's car to consult with a state trooper and the woman reportedly drove off. The deputy followed the SUV and stated that she reached speeds of nearly 100 mph, went through a red light and went into oncoming traffic lanes at times. The chase came to an end when the woman crashed her SUV into the side of the bridge located on Highway 529. She was arrested and charged with driving with a suspended license, reckless driving, drunk driving and attempting to elude police. Woman Faces Thousands in Fines plus Possible Jail Time
The woman that was arrested could be required to pay substantial fines and fees as well as serve time in jail if she is convicted of the charges against her. In addition to these possible penalties, officials state that they will most likely be pursuing legal action to make her responsible for the over $50,000 in costs to repair the bridge.
