Two men, ages 58 and 45 years old, have been arrested in connection to a large number of thefts involving items at a number of Houston area cemeteries. The thefts primarily included items at grave sites made of bronze or brass such as vases. It is suspected that the items were sold to scrap metal dealers that did not adhere to the laws concerning the purchase of scrap metal. Scrap dealers are required to take a photo of the person they buy scrap metal from and document the individual's vehicle license information and what items that person brought to sell. Police monitor scrap metal companies and as yet, none of the stolen items has turned up. Investigators began looking into the slew of thefts which began in the fall of 2013 and involved cemeteries in Harris County, Montgomery County and San Jacinto County. The value of the things that were stolen is estimated to total about $57,000. Families of deceased loved ones have had to purchase new vases and other such items after discovering that the chain which is meant to prevent theft of the items had been cut and the metal vase stolen. A bronze vase sells for about $200 but will likely bring very little, maybe $5, to an individual trying to illegally sell it to a scrap dealer. Speak with a criminal defense attorney immediately if you have been accused of a theft crime.
Third Suspect Sought in Cemetery Theft Ring
The cemetery thefts investigation led authorities to arrest D.B. and T.W. but a third man, 25-year-old M.J. is still being sought by police. The two individuals already in custody have been held on charges of organized criminal activity. They face the possibility of serious felony punishment if convicted of the charges against them.
