Gun control is a hotly-contested subject in this country in light of the mass slayings of both children and adults by school shooters in the last decade. Laws related to guns and other weapons are subject to change due to increased pressure on politicians and legislatures to protect the public. Knowing and understanding what you can and cannot do in regards to guns in your local area is essential if you wish to avoid legal trouble. In California, you can be charged with a weapons offense for various actions, such as illegally discharging a gun, carrying a concealed weapon, using a weapon in the commission of a crime, illegally selling weapons, illegally transporting weapons, unlicensed possession of a gun, possession of an assault weapon, and assault with a deadly weapon against another.
Those who are prohibited from possessing and using weapons in California include convicted felons, minors, drug addicts, and the mentally ill, including those have been acquitted of a crime due to an insanity defense as well as those who have been convicted of certain misdemeanors. California Assembly Bill 144, recently signed into law, prohibits the open carrying of firearms, even if unloaded. Violations of the law carry a penalty of up to $1,000 in fines and up to one year in jail. To carry a concealed weapon, you must have obtained a permit from your local sheriff's office. Requirements for such a permit include valid reasons for justifying such a carry and completion of an approved training class in the use of firearms.
