A Dallas police officer and his partner were recently fired from the Dallas Police Department for their part in the death of a bicyclist on April 21 of this year. One of the fired officers, B. B., has been charged with negligent homicide in the matter. An internal investigation by the Dallas PD revealed that the two officers had been reckless and had endangered the life of the bicyclist by pursuing him and later had lied about what they had done to investigators and on their police reports.
The two officers had thought the bicyclist was engaging in suspicious activity. When they flashed their lights and tried to get him to stop, the bicyclist fled on his bike. They then pursued him with B. B. in a squad car while his partner was on foot. In giving chase, B. B. followed the bicyclist onto a grassy area which caused the bicyclist to lose speed. B. B. was driving so fast, however, that he could not stop in time to avoid hitting the bicyclist, who later died in a hospital of serious injuries. After the incident, the two police officers moved the bicyclist, his bike, and the squad car and lied about what happened so it was believed that the bicyclist had been struck by some other unknown motorist.
B. B. faces six months up to two years in prison for the negligent homicide charge. He is also being investigated by the FBI for civil rights violations against the victim.
