A 50 year-old Dallas man, K. E., was recently sentenced to 11 years in prison after being convicted of the manslaughter of a 26 year-old man. The convicted man stabbed the victim with a piece of glass in an incident on a green line DART light-rail train back in October of 2012. The younger man and a companion on the train were intoxicated at the time. The victim and the convicted man apparently got into a fight while on the train and were arguing as they exited at Lake June Station. After that, surveillance video revealed K. E. stabling the victim in the neck before fleeing the area.
Known for being a regular customer of Henderson Chicken, a fast food outlet, the defendant was located through because investigators at the crime scene discovered discarded fried chicken. They traced it to a nearby Henderson's where employees recognized K. E. from video clips. This led to police officers intercepting K. E. the next time he came into that location to buy fast food. Evidence in the manslaughter case included video surveillance as well as the phone recordings of another passenger on the train.
Under the Texas Penal Code, manslaughter is defined as recklessly causing the death of another and is charged as a second-degree felony. It carries a penalty of two to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.
