Drunk Driver Faces Charges for Murder of Detroit Policeman

A Detroit police officer was directing traffic when he was struck by a car. The 17-year veteran officer was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his serious injuries and died. The driver of the car that fatally injured the officer was a 30-year-old man from out of state. It was found that the man, S.M., was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time and faces serious charges. Initially, S.M. was charged with assault with intent to commit murder but the assessed charges were increased when the officer died of his injuries. S.M. has pleaded guilty to charges of 2nd degree murder and operating a vehicle under the influence. He could receive up to 35 years in prison at his sentencing hearing coming up in a few weeks.
