In New York, domestic violence is one of the most common crimes. Domestic violence is a crime that involves a family member, blood relationship or having a child in common. There are numerous crimes which can fall into the category of domestic violence such as assault and battery, stalking, rape, sexual abuse, and even murder.
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Domestic violence is so common in New York that there are courtrooms set aside just to handle these types of cases. One of the more unfortunate areas of domestic violence relates to women becoming victims of brain injury. When a fight ensues, a common area where women get hit is in the head or face and these can easily turn into brain injury if enough force is used. By definition, a TBI is a brain injury that occurs as a result of physical force. There are different types of brain injuries that can occur from domestic violence, namely:
- Closed head injuries (these are a result of a blow to the head from being shoved up against a wall, hit with an object or being forcefully pushed in some other manner.) This type of injury can also occur from excessive shaking but does not result in any skull fracture. This can leave a person with serious local or widespread damage.
- Penetrating head injuries (result when a person's skull is penetrated with an object like a knife, bullet, or other object that directly goes into the skull and causes damage to that specific part)
- Deprivation of oxygen can be another form of TBI as a person can acquire brain damage rapidly if deprived of oxygen as in the case of strangulation.
