Luckily for the police, they got a break in an unresolved case involving a serial rapist when the alleged suspect fled the scene and then was involved in a car accident, and several items of evidence were discovered, as reported by CNN.
D.C., 30, was identified four days after he crashed his vehicle into a light pole. He was allegedly trying to escape from the crime scene according to authorities. D.C. was charged with seven sexual assaults, while he lay unresponsive and in critical condition in an area hospital. Tulsa Police Chief C.J. said that D.C. was identified after the department had analyzed a "tremendous amount of absolutely miraculous evidence" that had been collected during the "crime scene investigation."
During a simple Internet search, D.C.'s name came up in association with the car crash. The report showed that he sped into a light pole on Sunday, June 29 – only ten minutes after the report of an alleged assault. D.C. was reportedly not wearing a seat belt and suffered numerous head injuries. Chief C.J. commented, "He has not been responsive at all."
This past April, D.C. had just left prison. He had served time for convictions on attempted robbery, attempted kidnapping and robbery, and robbery with a dangerous weapon. Chief C.J. said that the community at large has been very nervous due to the ongoing attacks and also extremely aware of any activity that seemed out of the ordinary. In regards to both the citizens and the victims, Chief C.J. said, "I hope this gives them some peace."
The suspect gained access to the women's homes by breaking in via a back entrance – either through a window or door. He kept himself hidden with clothing and only attacked after the sun went down. Because of the dark, victims recounted different ideas of what their attacker looked like. He could have been a light-skinned black man, a man of Hispanic descent, or a white man with a tan.
The eight attacks were, however, linked by what the assailant did and said that was similar in each. There is one single attack that is still being investigated. In that case it is possible that it was a different attacker. One female victim was 29 years old; all of the other women assaulted were between 56 and 78 years old.
According to reporters, D.C.'s criminal history began in 2002 with an armed robbery. In 2005 he attempted to assault a woman. In 2006 he had a warrant for assault and battery. Finally, in 2006, he was convicted for attempted battery. No other arrests are anticipated in the serial rapes. Formal charges expected to be made against D.C. include alleged sexual battery and rape.
