According to KRDO.com, Colorado's "Heat Is On Campaign" has led to 1,414
DUI (driving under the influence) arrests throughout the state. The 18 day law enforcement crack down ended last Tuesday and started when law enforcement agencies throughout the state decided to get tougher on drunk drivers. 48 law enforcement agencies, including the Colorado State Patrol, were able to make an astounding 1,414 arrests during the 18 day crusade.
The DUI crackdown campaign began August 15th and ended on September 2nd. According to official reports, only 9 DUI related deaths occurred in the state of Colorado during this time span, where as 16 deaths occurred during the same time span last year.
"This DUI crackdown may be over, but our enforcement of the state's DUI laws will not let up until we see zero traffic deaths caused by impaired drivers," says Col. Mark Trostel, Chief of the Colorado State Patrol. "One death is too many. And it's high time people realize that drinking and driving is a crime that will not be tolerated."
In the state of Colorado, over 30,000 DUI arrests are made each year. Due to this staggering number, laws surrounding DUI convictions have become even harsher. Even first time DUI offenders are subjected to jail time and fines if convicted. Additionally, it is estimated that a first time DUI conviction costs approximately $10,000, including chemical testing, fines, attorney fees and increased insurance rates.
