The trial in the case concerning two Fullerton ex-police officers started recently. The officers have been charged in connection to the death of a homeless man who they are accused of causing fatal injuries. The incident happened over two years ago in July 2011 at the Fullerton Transportation Center. Officers were responding to reports of a vehicle break-in nearby and began questioning a homeless man, K.T., and his father at the bus depot. The incident apparently escalated and the officers requested assistance. The two men on trial said that K.T. became violent with them and was refusing to obey their orders at the time. The officers felt they had to use force to subdue the man who had a history of many years of methamphetamine use and violence against his own family members. K.T. was hospitalized with severe injuries and died a few days later when he was taken off life support. The two former officers were later charged. J.C. faces felony charges for involuntary manslaughter and use of excessive force. The other former officer involved, M.R., has been charged with involuntary manslaughter and second degree murder. According to reports, this is the first time an Orange County officer has been charged with murder while on duty. If M.R. is convicted of the charges against him he could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
