"Revenge porn" occurs when someone posts nude or sexually explicit images of a person online without their permission. This type of behavior can occur after a relationship breakup or after incidents in which the victim gets drunk at parties. It is often done by people who wish to get even with former intimate partners or done to harass, annoy, embarrass, or brag about one's sexual conquests. A California Senator wishes to make such an action a crime and has authored Senate Bill 255 to do so. He has stated that people who post such private images in an effort to get revenge or for other reasons are engaging in reprehensible behavior and that such an action should not be tolerated in society.
Under SB 255, distributing these types of images in an act of cyber revenge would result in a misdemeanor charge, punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of $1,000. Since the bill was proposed, several other legislators have signed on as co-authors, adding their weight to it. The bill is expected to be voted on in the Senate in the next few weeks. According to news reports, the proposed bill was partly inspired by the death of a 15 year-old girl in Northern California who committed suicide after pictures were posted online by three boys who sexually assaulted her while she was passed out at a party. The boys in that case were arrested in connection with the sexual assault.
