In the world we live in, prescription drugs are flooding the market. It’s hard to turn on the TV during prime time and not see a commercial for latest and the greatest wonder drug. Prescription drug abuse and crimes are a growing problem across the globe. Between advanced medical technology, coming out with new drugs to treat conditions and disease and, the plethora of new “diseases” coined by medical and psychiatric doctors, the conditions for prescription fraud and drug abuse are ripe.
Prescription fraud is one of the largest problems plaguing teens and young adults. Not only are teens raiding their parents medicine cabinets, teens are also selling these prescription drugs at school and on the street to other young children and teenagers. Although these prescription drugs may be legal when obtained by a medical doctor or psychiatrist, consuming too much of the drugs, or in combination with other drugs can be deadly. Some of the most highly addictive drugs include: Vicodin, OxyContin, Demerol, Percocet, Darvocet, Ritalin and Amphetamines.
Prescription drugs can be abused in a variety of ways. People can steal their doctor’s prescription pad and write themselves prescriptions, people can alter the dosage or amount on a prescription, or they can distribute or sell prescription drugs to people who do not have a prescription. Selling, distributing, trafficking, prescription fraud and illegal possession are all felony offenses which carry stiff penalties. If convicted, you face thousands of dollars in fines and years of incarceration in a Texas State Prison. If you were arrested for a prescription drug crime, contact a drug crime defense attorney right away.
Many of the people who are convicted of prescription drug crimes include medical doctors, dentists, nurses and other medical professionals. Not only are they facing criminal consequences, but they are risking their careers as well.
