Tasers Proved Ineffective At Stopping Female Assailant
After assaulting a man with a sharp object, a woman was shot and fatally wounded by officers on the scene, reports the Los Angeles Times.
The shooting occurred at about 2:50 PM at the 3100 block of Pine Avenue. According to a statement released by Long Beach Police Department spokesperson Nancy Pratt, officers initially responded to a call reporting a screaming woman who was attacking a man with a sharp implement.
When the officers arrived on the scene, they saw the woman slashing the man in the head and neck. They ordered her to stop and to release the object, which she did not. The report then says that an officer deployed a Taser, but that it proved ineffective. After this attempt failed, the officers on the scene claim she began to advance towards them with the sharp object, causing them to shoot her several times.
Police Investigate Violent Assault
The woman and the man were then rushed to a local hospital to be treated for their wounds. The woman died from her injuries, which were listed as extremely critical upon admission, shortly thereafter. The man remains in critical condition.
Preliminary investigation by the officers has revealed that the man and the woman were in a relationship. They were not married, but lived together in the same residence with two children. The woman allegedly became frightened that the man was going to harm the kids, prompting the violent assault in an effort to protect them. The children have been removed to the custody of the Department of Children and Family Services.
The identities of those involved have not yet been released, as the investigation is still ongoing.
