Based on FBI statistics, CityRating.com reports an upward trend in the overall crime rate in the Las Vegas area based on the last ten years of data. The website reports that both violent crime and property crime has increased. Based on these statistics, it predicts a higher Las Vegas crime rate in 2013 than in 2010. Despite this, violent crime in 2010 in the city was lower than the national violent crime rate as was city property crime. Furthermore, the 2010 violent crime and property crime rates in Las Vegas were lower than those for the entire state of Nevada that year.
In conflict with the predicted rise in crime in Las Vegas from the above website, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported in June 2012 that the crime rate was decreasing in the downtown area. According to the Las Vegas police captain, a 5.19 percent reduction in violent crime occurred in the area between January and May of 2012, an 11.25 percent reduction in assault and battery cases, a 6 percent reduction in burglary, and an 8.4 percent reduction in auto theft crimes. The total number of crime incidents in the downtown area decreased by 23 percent. Homicide rates remained unchanged. The only downtown crime statistic which rose was that of sexual assault.
