For the tenth year in a row, the overall crime rate in the city of Los Angeles has dropped, as reported through preliminary number-crunching by the Los Angeles Police Department. The crime rate decreased by 2 percent, with drops in major crimes such as assault, robbery, and auto thefts. The 2 percent decrease is less than in previous years due to increases in less serious crimes such as personal thefts and a small increase in homicides. Huge variations in criminal activity exist from neighborhood to neighborhood throughout the city with wealthier areas having bigger decreases in comparison to poorer neighborhoods. According to the figures, however, overall burglaries and aggravated assaults have decreased by 7 percent; robbery has decreased by 11 percent; and grand theft auto has decreased by 4 percent.
Criminologists and law enforcement officials in the city cannot fully account for the continued decrease in the overall crime rate. A declining crime rate goes against previous beliefs that crime is connected to economic woes. The dropping crime rate in Los Angeles has occurred against the backdrop of one of the worst economic recessions in recent history.
