A U.S. Senator from Idaho who has said that, as a Mormon, he doesn't drink alcohol was arrested for a DUI in December of 2012 in the state of Virginia. The Senator was arrested around 12:45 a.m. on December 23 after being spotted by law enforcement when he ran a red light. He failed field sobriety tests and it was found that his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) on a breathalyzer test was .11 percent, well above .08 percent which is the legal limit in all states. The Senator was taken into custody and later released on a $1,000 bond. He has served as a bishop in the Mormon Church for many decades; Mormon doctrine considers alcohol, coffee, tea, and illegal drugs as harmful substances which should be avoided.
The Senator pleaded guilty to the charge of driving while under the influence in January 2013. He was ordered to pay a fine of $250 and to complete an alcohol safety program. His driver's license was suspended for a year. These are typical DUI penalties for drivers in the state of Virginia. The Republican Senator apologized for his behavior and said he would not drink again and would seek forgiveness and repentance according to the tenets of the Mormon religion.
DUI Defense Representation in Los Angeles
A drunk driving charge is a serious matter for anyone, whether a public figure or not. In California, a DUI arrest can lead to severe consequences, including potential jail time, heavy fines and financial repercussions, a license suspension, DUI school, and other court-ordered actions depending on the case. Conviction of a DUI will also result in a permanent criminal record which can limit future employment and career opportunities. Not all DUI charges lead to a conviction, however. The help of an experienced attorney can maximize your chances for a favorable outcome.
