Driver Charged with Aggravated DUI after Fatal Accident

A Chicago man accused of causing a fatal injury crash after getting behind the wheel drunk has been charged with a serious felony offense. The criminal complaint filed against the man states that 30-year-old R.M. was travelling on the Interstate 80 in the early morning hours on Saturday when the accident occurred. R.M. was driving a minivan west and apparently drifted into the eastbound lanes. A 66-year-old man, A.B., was returning home after making a delivery for the medication delivery company he worked for and travelling east on I-80. The man in the eastbound vehicle was unable to stop or avoid R.M.'s van which was going the wrong way and the two cars collided head on. R.M.'s car careened into the median after the crash while A.B.'s car came to a stop in eastbound lanes. A semi truck was not able to avoid A.B.'s disabled vehicle and smashed into it. The trucker was not injured but A.B. suffered fatal injuries and died. R.M. suffered non-life threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital. He was arrested after being released from the medical facility on Monday and booked into the county jail on charges of aggravated driving under the influence. R.M. was later taken back to the hospital under police watch for treatment of his injuries which were reportedly bleeding. If convicted of the charges against him, R.M. could be sentenced to over 14 years in prison as well as other penalties.
