In Orange County, several DUI checkpoints will be conducted over the 2012 - 2013 New Year's holiday period in an effort to cut down on drunk and drug-impaired driving in the county. Checkpoints will be set up in Seal Beach, Placentia, Anaheim, and Buena Park, manned by the local Sheriff Departments and city police departments. Additional unannounced checkpoints will also be put into place by these law enforcement agencies as well as the California Highway Patrol. The saturation of DUI checkpoints as a campaign began on December 14 by the Avoid the 38 Task Force, a group of 38 agencies participating in a crackdown on drunk drivers in Orange County.
According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), these types of checkpoints have documented results in reducing traffic accidents and injuries associated with drunk driving. The CDC has stated that research published in an issue of Traffic Injury Prevention showed that DUI checkpoints showed consistent results in reducing accidents by as much as 20 percent. Per the NHTSA, more than 10,000 individuals lost their lives in alcohol-related traffic crashes in 2010.
