Last year, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) reported a surge of crimes being committed on the subway systems of New York City. At that point, the MTA said that petty thieves were causing the crime rate to climb by 20 percent from the previous year. In the first quarter of 2012, the subway systems saw 232 robberies, which was an increase of 31 percent from the previous year. 393 grand larcenies occurred during the same period, which was an increase of 23 percent. The grand larceny thefts involved such possessions as trendy electronics, including iPhones and iPads. Approximately one-third of those who were robbed were asleep while traveling on the subway, which is why the MTA came up with its “stay awake and stay alert” campaign.
Several MTA board members pushed for the creation of a new prosecutor who would be appointed to only handle subway crime. Another proposal to help deter subway crime was the possibility of banning subway crime repeat offenders from using the system.
The New York City subway system is the seventh busiest such system in the world in numbers of annual riders. It transports approximately 1.5 billion passengers across the New York City area every year.
