A 53-year-old man was recently convicted in a case involving the death of an elderly pedestrian. The accident happened in early July 2012 while S.B. was driving a Torrance Transit bus through Long Beach. He was travelling south on Pacific Avenue when an 87-year-old man and his wife were making their way across the street in a marked crosswalk. The man was struck by the bus and suffered severe injuries. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite best efforts, he died of internal injuries. S.B. was later charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter. According to court reports, there were several witness accounts as well as video of the accident which showed that S.B. allegedly saw the couple in the crosswalk but didn't stop to allow them to finish crossing. Prosecutors argued that the video showed that S.B. was 200 feet away when he first saw the couple crossing and had slowed down somewhat but proceeded traveling through the crosswalk located at Pacific Avenue and 8th Street and the elderly pedestrian was subsequently struck and suffered fatal injuries. S.B.'s sentencing hearing is scheduled for mid April. He could receive up to one year in county jail plus other penalties. Reports did not indicate whether or not S.B. has continued to be employed by Torrance Transit up through his conviction or if he was dismissed. If you have been charged with a crime then you need a skilled criminal defense lawyer working for you right away.
