A Gainesville neighborhood was shocked to discover the violent incident that had taken place within their peaceful subdivision. A man with a gun came up to an elderly resident as he was out front of his house. The elderly man was hit in the face with the gun and forced back into his home. Two additional men then entered the home and tied up the 80 year old man and his 76 year old wife. The intruders proceeded to go through the house in search of valuables. They took some vintage weapons, the couple's SUV, and a variety of other property. The man and his wife were able to free themselves and call for help. The home invasion suspects were not captured at the time.
Robbery Versus Burglary Charges
Robbery charges generally have much harsher possible consequences than burglary. What sets the two apart is the use of violence or threat of violence in order to steal property from someone. Robbery is considered a violent crime because of the involvement of firearms, knives or other weapons, or other means of threatening physical harm to the victim. In charges involving burglary the value of the property that was illegally obtained is more the focus. When people are threatened or injured in order to obtain the property, the possible penalties are much higher. If you have been charged with this serious crime you should contact a
Gainesville criminal defense attorney immediately.
