Possession of Marijuana Gets Lowered Penalties

By Jowdy & Jowdy  Jul. 29, 2010 4:05p

Just last month, the two year fight for lowering marijuana penalties ended in the state of Connecticut. It was announced that possessing a small amount of marijuana is now considered a minor offense which is punishable by a monetary fine.

Details of the New Law

Underneath the new law, a person found possessing one half of an ounce or less of marijuana for the first time will be levied a fine of $150 with the amount of fine increasing with any future or subsequent instances of its possession. For anyone underage who is caught with marijuana in their possession, their driver's license will be suspended for two months as an additional penalty.

Repeat offenders can get fined a maximum amount of $500 for each offense. An estimate given by Connecticut's Office of Fiscal Analysis concludes that this new law will save the state close to a million dollars and as well as bring in income of at least $600,000 in monetary fines.

Have you been charged with a drug crime?

Even though the marijuana penalties have decreased, there still exist many harsh penalties on the books for other drug crimes. If you have been charged with a drug crime in Connecticut, you should consult with a Connecticut criminal defense attorney as soon as possible. Being convicted of a drug crime can result in you losing assets, property and even the privilege of child custody after a divorce. It can also hinder your ability to obtain career opportunities, financial loans and housing in the future and these are all important freedoms you don't want tampered with.

At Jowdy & Jowdy, we provide aggressive defense to our clients and we know how to present a compelling case to influence judges or a jury. Your chances are far greater of avoiding a conviction if you have an experienced and competent attorney to work with.

Contact a Connecticut drug crime defense lawyer in our office to set up an appointment for a free initial consultation and we will review the details of your drug crime charges.
