A man and a woman, both 30 years old, were arrested recently in connection to a number of incidents pertaining to over a dozen vehicle break-ins in south Denton County. According to sheriff's deputies, 17 car burglaries were reported in the Lantana area in January and February of this year. Authorities began searching for the suspects after a credit card that had been stolen in one of the vehicle burglaries was used at a local Walmart. Investigators were able to obtain a picture of the pair who used the card by searching the store's video surveillance footage of the checkout area. The picture was distributed to police throughout the area and the man and woman were subsequently arrested in Watauga. Police say that they had items in their possession which linked them to the auto burglaries. The woman, A.A., is reportedly being held in lieu of $40,000 bail on charges relating to the break-ins (burglary of a vehicle, theft of property, criminal mischief, fraud) as well as possession of a controlled substance. The man, M.M. was being held in the Denton County Jail for burglary of a vehicle with two or more previous convictions. Both individuals face the possibility of significant incarceration sentences, fines and other penalties if they are found guilty of the charges against them. Theft Charges in Denton County
Being charged with a theft offense can have serious repercussions. Whether a suspect is charged with a misdemeanor or felony depends on several factors including the value of the items allegedly stolen, the circumstances of the theft and if any other crimes were committed during the incident. Violent theft offenses involving the presence of a deadly weapon, assault or battery are nearly always considered felonies regardless of the value of the property taken. Additionally, the suspect may have to face civil legal action from the theft victim as well.
