A Denton man was arrested at a gas station recently while an officer was on a routine patrol of the area. The officer was on a foot patrol when he began speaking with the suspect at the gas station. The officer asked the man if he was in possession of any illegal drugs and the man replied that he only had muscle relaxers. According to reports, the man then volunteered to the officer that he had a joint in his car. The officer conducted a probable cause search of the man's vehicle and discovered the joint as well as methamphetamine and THC oil (oil derived from the marijuana plant). The man was taken into custody and his vehicle impounded. He has been charged with possession of a controlled substance and could be sentenced to a year or more behind bars. Speak with a criminal defense lawyer immediately if you have been charged with any drug offense in Denton County.
Someone accused of a drug crime may be facing misdemeanor or felony charges depending on several factors such as what type of drug was involved, how much of it, where the drug offense allegedly occurred and other circumstances. For instance, if a person is found to be in possession of a less than an ounce of marijuana intended for personal use at a bar then he or she may face a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. If that same individual is found with two joints near a school then that person could face much harsher charges. Possession of certain drugs such as cocaine, heroin and meth—even in small amounts—can result in severely punished felony charges. It is crucial that you have skilled legal representation on your side in any drug crime situation.
